There are thousands of skincare brands to choose from in today’s day and age. But how do we know which one actually works? And how do we know if it is actually good for our skin?

What if I told you that 90% of your skin and makeup products aren’t safe to use? Chances are, the cosmetics you have in your very own bathroom will contain one or more of these ingredients.

Five ingredients to avoid at all costs:
Here are the five ingredients you should avoid in skincare products at all costs. If your products contain these ingredients you should seriously consider a natural alternative.

SLS/SLES
These foaming agents are also industrial level de-greasers. They increase dryness and roughness and may aggravate dry skin and eczema (hmm, wonder why!). They also disturb the growth process of new hair and skin.

Mineral oils
Mineral oils are actually a petroleum-based product (not a mineral water substance as a lot of people think!). Mineral oils clog the pore, interfere with the skin’s ability to eliminate toxins, promote acne and other skin irritations. They also slow down the development of new, healthy skin cells resulting in premature ageing.

PEGs (Polyethylene Glycol)
PEG’s are used to stabilize and thicken skincare and make up products. They are petroleum based – ew! Evidence suggests that PEG’s may be allergens to our skin and draw out moisturise from the skin.

Parabens
Although inconclusive, studies have shown that parabens can be absorbed into the bloodstream and have been found in cancerous tumours, particularly breast tissue. Parabens are also noted as suspected allergens and as a cause of allergic dermatitis.

Parfum
We all love a beautiful scent in our cosmetics however, artificial fragrances are made using many synthetic chemicals and can cause skin irritations. Opt for a natural fragrance like essential oils instead!

The side effects of some these ingredients include:

  • Skin inflammation
  • Eye irritation
  • Increased risk of cancer
  • Dermatitis
  • Nausea
  • Diarrhoea

I hope this post has helped you to understand what your skincare may contain. The more natural your products are, the better your skin will respond! There is no need to be putting chemicals on our face when there are SO many great natural alternatives to choose from.
