Ever wondered what type of acne scars you have? Acne scarring is what’s left behind after nodules and cysts are gone. They come in all shapes and sizes. Red, purple and skin toned.

Acne scars can strike at any age but usually later in life as a result of picking, popping and rubbing blemishes. They can also occur without picking as a result of intense inflammation in the skin during active breakouts.

5 Types Of Acne Scars

There are many types of acne scars ranging in severity from mild to severe.

  1. Ice pick scars – These scars are thin, deep scars on the surface of the skin. They look like small puncture wounds, usually superficial.
  2. Atrophic scars – These scars are more superficial than ice pick scars. They appear as smooth, shallow pits on the surface of the skin.
  3. Keloid acne scars – These scars are bumpy, raised and usually dome-shaped. They range in colour from pink to red and are a result of overactive collagen deposits.
  4. Hypertrophic scars – These scars are similar to keloid scars. They appear as raised bumps on the skin, but are usually smaller and found on the neck or back.
  5. Rolling scars These scars are shallow, yet wide and deep in the skin as a result of several grouped acne nodules. These scars cause a wavy texture in the skin and are most commonly seen on cheeks.
